MER Clinic: Bottle Cars

Presented by John Glaab @ MER Raleigh 2011

The fifth of a series of clinics on steel mills: Bottle Cars, also known as subs, torpedoes, and mixer cars, are used to transport molten iron from the blast furnace to steel making facilities. With capacities from 90 tons to 350 tons these cars can carry a load of molten metal for as much as 35 miles and hold the metal in a liquid state for several hours. This clinic will explain the history, evolution and design of these interesting cars and give tips on kitbashing and weathering.
